“Aren’t you going to stay and scrub my back?” There was his notorious hesitation and then he said something that surprised her.
“It’s tempting enough to be around you with your clothes on. Tomorrow, early, I’m going out on the mountain and get something for you.”
“What?”
“You’ll just have to wait and see. If I don’t come back, something got me.” He stepped inside and closed the door.
Lacey stroked the water. Her dress dropped from her shoulders onto the wooden porch and she stepped into the warm bath and sat down. She heard herself give a long, slow sigh.
Pulling her knees toward her—her back sliding down the rough, soft wood—she felt the water rise above her shoulders to her chin.
Lacey slowly became aware of the quiet. She was captured by a strange tranquility, a place of emotional serenity coupled with the persistent thought that everything in the world at that particular moment made sense.
