When the lad was found he was crouched against the roots of a fallen tree with a mountain lion cub clutched in his arms. The boy was frozen in fright, unable to move. The cub's mother had him cornered and was about to leap when Sean came upon the scene. She charged, leaping for his throat. Sean caught the cat in his big hands. One hand gripped inside the cat's mouth and around the lower jaw. His other hand held one of the cat's back legs. A paw raked across his shoulder, cutting deep. Another ripped down his chest. Sean knelt down and broke the animal's back over his knee. He threw the dead cat as far as he could, picked up the frightened boy, and returned to camp.
Sean would carry the scars for the rest of his life. When the boy told the story there was a great celebration. Sean was begged to tell the story himself, but modesty prevented him. It was the custom of the Indians to brag about their exploits around the fire, so the boy did the bragging for him. From that day forward he was known as "Yaweta", which loosely translated would mean, "The Giant Protector of the People".
