The deep bass voice and cultured English of He Who Waits interrupted my thoughts. “You were granted the sacred gift of seeing and hearing the spirit world, Cuwitku. It has been my responsibility to watch out for you since the day you were born. All have a place in the Circle and your place is to find justice for those who do not receive it.”
I opened my eyes and looked at the man or the spirit or the vision or whatever he was. “You’re here to help me find justice. For who exactly? What kind of justice? Only for big things? Or everyday small injustices, too, like someone stealing a parking space? Why didn’t you bother me before?”
As if he could sense a shift in my perception, a smile of relief passed over He Who Waits’s face before he answered me in the same slow, patient voice I’d become accustomed to hearing. “What is different is that you are now in a more sacred place. It is now more difficult for you to ignore what you have. Your mission has not changed. The option of ignoring your gifts has.”
It took a moment for his words to sink in. Deep in my soul I knew he was right, but I sure didn’t want to admit it. Why couldn’t I just be normal?
