Excerpt

He was standing at the north end of what appeared to be a beautiful valley.  To his left a lake lay against the mountain.  One side was a cliff a mile or more long and several hundred feet high.  There was a waterfall cascading down a hundred feet into the lake.  Just a few feet from him was the north end, exactly opposite the spring that was the beginning of the river.  Very narrow at this point, the lake extended along the side of the valley, expanding to a width of about two hundred feet, and extending a mile or more as it narrowed down again.  He could see fish jumping in the deep water.  The blue water sparkled in the sun, reminding the old man of a star sapphire his wife had given him years ago.
Before him was a meadow.  Deer were grazing, and elk.  Further out the forest started.  Even from this distance, he could see that it was virgin forest.  To his right there was rim rock around the valley.  He could see a large cave a mile or so away.  The old man looked for a minute and went back to get his binoculars.
With the binoculars, he scanned from the lake and around to his right.  Three streams came from various parts of the valley and entered the lake at the far end forming a marshy area.  He could see cattails growing.  There were moose in the marsh, eating.  He counted over a hundred deer and fifty elk in the meadow.  Up on the side of the mountain was a big horn sheep.  A bald eagle, circled in the air above the trees.  He saw a bear, then another, back by the forest.
The south end of the valley sloped up from the meadow to a stand of timber.  Some of the trees were so big that one tree, if cut into lumber, could build several homes.  A little further to his right, on the south end, was a thick stand of lodge pole pine.  The forest thinned as he swung his view on to the right.  A little before the big cave, he had seen earlier the forest ended, and meadow began.  It looked as though the valley was about half meadow and half forest.  At the foot of the cliffs and mountains where he stood and around to the cave area was a narrow strip with sparse grass and many rocks.
As far as he could tell (and later proved), there was no way into or out of this valley.  Other than, through the tunnel he had just come through.  It was as it had been for a thousand years.  No wonder the forest service maps had been vague, and some of the distance measurements didn't add up.  Here was a valley at least two or three miles wide and almost circular.  No one knew of its existence.
As the old man looked, in wonder, a feeling came over him he knew he had found Brigadoon.  This was Shangri-La.  This was Utopia.  This was HOME.  The old man realized then, until now, in the back of his mind he had always figured to return to civilization.  Now he knew he never would.  He knew he was born to live here.  He decided to wait until he had a full day to explore the valley.  He would start early in the morning.
